Reflection & Professional Growth
Reflection
Completing this program has been a meaningful step in my journey toward veterinary school and my long-term goal of becoming a veterinarian. When I began the program, I saw it primarily as an opportunity to gain knowledge in shelter medicine. Over time, it became much more than that. It challenged me to think critically, communicate professionally, and understand veterinary medicine on a broader level. I learned that the profession is not only about diagnosing and treating individual patients, but also about population health, preventive care, public health, ethics, and creating systems that improve outcomes for animals and people.

One of the most valuable aspects of this experience has been being able to connect what I learn academically with what I experience at work. Working in a veterinary hospital while studying shelter medicine has given me two perspectives that complement each other. My job has shown me the realities of clinical medicine, teamwork, and patient care, while this program has taught me how medicine can also be practiced through shelters, community outreach, and resource-conscious care models. Together, these experiences have helped me understand that veterinary medicine is a diverse profession with many ways to make an impact.

This program has also confirmed that veterinary medicine is the right path for me. The workload, projects, presentations, and research required dedication and discipline, but they also strengthened my motivation. Instead of feeling discouraged by challenges, I became more committed to continuing forward. Every assignment completed and every new skill developed has felt like another step closer to the career I have always wanted.
Looking back, I see this program as an important bridge between where I started and where I hope to go next. It has prepared me academically, professionally, and personally for future challenges. Most importantly, it has helped shape the kind of veterinarian I want to become—someone who values compassion, lifelong learning, adaptability, and service to both animals and the community.
Personal Growth
Throughout this program, I have grown significantly as a person. Balancing graduate studies, work responsibilities, and preparation for veterinary school required strong time management, organization, and persistence. I learned how to prioritize responsibilities, meet deadlines, and remain productive during stressful periods. These experiences helped me become more disciplined and better able to manage multiple commitments at once.

I have also grown in confidence. Presentations, discussions, and major projects pushed me outside of my comfort zone and required me to trust my own abilities. Over time, I became more comfortable speaking professionally, presenting ideas clearly, and taking on challenges that once felt intimidating. This confidence has carried into other areas of my life and helped me believe more strongly in my ability to succeed in demanding environments such as veterinary school.
Another important area of personal growth has been resilience. There were times when balancing school, work, and future goals felt overwhelming, but I learned how to keep moving forward even when things were difficult. I became better at managing stress, adapting when plans changed, and staying focused on long-term goals instead of temporary obstacles. That resilience will continue to be valuable throughout my future education and career.

Finally, this program helped me develop greater self-awareness. I gained a clearer understanding of my strengths, such as dedication, compassion, and determination, while also recognizing areas where I still want to improve. I now understand that growth is an ongoing process, and that success comes from remaining humble, motivated, and willing to learn. Overall, this experience has helped me become a stronger, more mature, and more prepared version of myself.
